Becca Reyes paused, speechless. How could feelings be forced like this?
"From now on, you should prioritize the cooking class, and only participate in their training when you have spare time. Did you hear that?!" Captain Lin’s voice became suddenly louder at the end.
"We heard it!"
Without any hesitation, Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes responded in unison. Their voices rang out, making a sort of pledge under the empty sky.
"In a few days, I will make an application for you. At that time, there will probably be an assessment for you," Captain Lin’s tone calmed down again, "If you feel you can’t pass, don’t bother participating. Our cooking class doesn’t want to lose face in such a way!"
Having said this, Captain Lin didn’t pay attention to their reactions. He walked around them and went straight back the same way, leaving them to figure things out.
That night, the cooking class was unexpectedly lively. Also, because Neal Thompson left midway, the atmosphere suddenly became harmonious. They were chatting and laughing, reminiscing about past events, discussing current fun stuff, and their future dreams. They talked about everything and anything, in small groups, barbecuing. It was incredibly lively.
Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes conscientiously tend to their barbecue. After a few attempts ending in burnt food, Flossie Wright was the first to master the technique, which further shook Becca Reyes’s confidence. As a result, for a long time, she performed poorly, wolfing down ten skewers of burnt chicken wings until her face was ashen.
The next day, at half past two in the morning.
The initially light sleeper, Flossie Wright, woke up from slight noises coming from the nearby bed before their three in the morning appointment. The moment she awoke, she saw Becca Reyes, who had already dressed and was jumping down from the adjacent bed.
"What are you up to?" Flossie asked, raising her eyebrows slightly and looking somewhat perplexed at Becca getting up so early.
Flossie usually woke up at three o’clock. By her everyday routine, Becca would be woken up by her. Today, for some unknown reason, Becca woke up early despite lack of sleep.
"Get up quickly." Becca quietly said, coming to Flossie’s bedside, gesturing for her to rise.
Flossie turned over, showing no intention of entertaining her.
"Flossie... Wright..."
Becca called Flossie’s name like she was summoning a spirit, pronouncing each word carefully, her voice lowered so not to disturb the others.
Seeing Flossie remain motionless, Becca stroked her chin and continued to call out eerily in a low voice, "Flossie ..."
Two fingers flicked off her forehead, effectively cutting off her last word.
At the same time, Flossie turned over and sat up on the bed. Without waiting for Becca’s surprise reaction, she leapt off the bed.
In their world, the ladder leading from the lower bunk to the upper one was practically non-existent.
So, the anger that Becca had been repressing due to the flick to her forehead vanished without a trace.
After getting dressed, Flossie and Becca silently slipped out of the room and leisurely walked from the cooking class to the training field.
"What are you planning to do?" Flossie asked Becca casually, still seemingly a bit sleepy.
However, before she could finish asking, Becca nudged her arm and pointed to a lit room in the neighbouring building, "I found out that Captain Hutchinson will be in the office today. Look, the light is on."
Flossie looked over and sure enough, it was Glenn Hutchinson’s office. She furrowed her brow, "What does that have to do with us?"
"Didn’t he help us last time?" Becca rubbed her palms together enthusiastically; it seemed she had been contemplating this plan for quite a while. "We know nothing about the new recruits’ training subjects. Even if we cram, we don’t have an inkling where to start. Only our shooting practice is decent. Since Captain Hutchinson is so familiar with the new recruits’ training, why not ask him? That way, when the evaluation comes, our scores might be decent."
Ever since Glenn Hutchinson had brought them for the 400-meter sea-crossing obstacle course, Becca had specifically taken time out during the day to observe the time spent on new recruit training. After comparing, it became clear that the best soldiers’ scores were only half of hers after just one day’s training.
She, therefore, realized the distinct possibility of failing without any prior experience in the evaluation.
"I’m not going."
Flossie glanced in the other direction, her refusal sharp and immediate, without the slightest hesitation.
Every time she saw Glenn Hutchinson, she would lose out. On top of that, he wasn’t an easy person to deal with. To ask him for training would likely cost them more. Flossie did not want to make a losing deal in front of Glenn Hutchinson.
"Hey, wait up." Becca saw Flossie about to leave and quickly grabbed her wrist. She was just about to persuade her when the last light in the building dimmed. She exclaimed with surprise, "Oh no, Captain Hutchinson is about to leave!"
However, in contrast to her eagerness, Flossie only felt a headache at the mention of "Hutchinson".
Flossie glanced at the darkened building and vaguely saw the office door open and close. A dark figure quickly passed by in the corridor, and then there was silence.
It was so quiet tonight that you couldn’t even hear footsteps.
"We’re just going to try, okay?" Becca, who was still clutching her, was intently watching the ground floor while trying to persuade Flossie.
"Let go first." Flossie’s wrist was sorely grabbed by Becca, she frowned, wishing to shake off the paw.
Without hesitation, Becca had a quick look at Flossie who didn’t seem to have any resentment, and promptly released her grip on her wrist.
But just then, a glaring flashlight beam was aimed directly at both of them. Without getting a chance to adjust, they both squinted their eyes to the intense light.
Then came the slightly cold voice.
"What are you two doing here?"
