After dinner, Flossie Wright estimated that it was time to leave, preparing to head back home. Naturally, Glenn Hutchinson offered her a ride home. However, the Young Hutchinson was full of energy and insisted on accompanying her back, bringing along his latest puzzle toy and subtly occupying both back seats, forcing Flossie to sit in the front.
Yet, because the entire Hutchinson family had left, when the aunt from upstairs came to their house after handling her affairs, it took ten minutes of continuous doorbell ringing before anyone answered. In the end, she had to wait half an hour at their doorstep before the neighbor came out, and she was finally able to bring her beloved daughter home.
Of course, this was just a minor incident unrelated to Glenn Hutchinson and his family.
The journey from the Hutchinson residence to the Wright Family was quite far. In the beginning, Flossie had some conversation with Glenn, but less than half an hour into the journey, she leaned against the backrest and fell asleep. Noticing her dozing off, Glenn did not wake her up but turned up the car’s heating a little instead.
When the car finally reached the entrance of the Wright Family Villa, Flossie and Young Hutchinson were both in a similar state of drowsiness. The young Hutchinson, tired from playing with his puzzle, obediently stayed in his seat, fastened his seatbelt, and fell asleep. Glenn, who had parked the car, looked at Flossie by his side and then at the young Hutchinson in the back seat, feeling that their sleeping postures were incredibly similar.
"Are we there?"
Just a few seconds after the car stopped, Flossie woke up from her drowse. She squinted her eyes, looked around outside the car window until she saw the gate of the Wright Family residence, and then fully regained consciousness.
Glenn replied, but his gaze was still lingering on her.
The light inside the car was off, and the outside was dark, except for the light from the gate shed into the car. In the dim vision, he could clearly see Flossie’s furrowed brows, her fair and delicate face, and even her gradually clearing dark eyes.
"Oh, thank you." Rubbing her forehead, without lingering, Flossie waved at him, then opened the door straight away.
Just as she stepped out of the car, Young Hutchinson also woke up from his dream. Almost subconsciously, he called out to Flossie. His sleepy little face leaned over, blinking his drowsy big eyes, and gazed eagerly at Flossie.
Flossie paused for a moment, then turned to look at him.
"Sister, goodbye."
As he waved his little hand at her, Young Hutchinson rubbed his eyes. His voice was still a little nasal.
After a brief pause, Flossie’s hand suddenly raised and tousled his messy hair. The usually cold tone now softened slightly, "Goodbye."
With that, she exited the car and walked away.
Her movements were always swift and decisive. One moment, her eyes softened, the next, she left a cool silhouette behind.
Still in the car, Glenn watched her retreating figure through the corner of his eye. The gradually sobering young Hutchinson suddenly grabbed his clothes, and asked, "Dad, can I see my sister again?"
Snowflakes floated leisurely through the night sky, emitting a crystal clear glow under the dim lights.
Glancing at the black coat beside him, Glenn withdrew his gaze.
A calm voice, like a gentle night breeze, stirring no waves.
Flossie entered the villa using her passcode, but the servants who were sweeping snow in the courtyard, upon seeing her, immediately relayed this to the tension-filled living room.
