The weather was especially cold in the early morning. Flossie Wright placed the flashlight on the tricycle, tucked both hands into her pockets, and then nodded at him, saying, "I can."
It didn’t matter if Flossie Wright didn’t know about it before, but now that she does, she couldn’t simply ignore it. Regardless of Winsley Scott’s secret plans, she merely had to make an appearance. It wasn’t too much of a troublesome task for her.
Upon receiving Flossie Wright’s consent, Winsley Scott was filled with joy.
However, before he could further discuss the matter with Flossie Wright, an emergency assembly alarm echoed throughout the entire team. He was stunned for a moment, but his Frogman training helped him snap back into reality.
This early, it must be a mission!
"Remember! Tonight! I’ll come find you then!"
Having rushed to finish his sentence to Flossie Wright, Winsley Scott darted towards the parade ground with life-risking speed.
Flossie Wright slightly furrowed her brows, watching as his figure darted into the boundless darkness. His figure moved briskly and was gone in an instance, his rhythmical footsteps echoing even after his figure disappeared.
Fading off into the distance.
Until completely silent.
Flossie Wright didn’t make much of the emergency assembly. She and Becca Reyes rarely took part in evening activities, let alone so-called missions.
In the end, they were still part of the cooking class.
At this time, she and Becca Reyes both had things to do, and there was simply no time to free themselves.
The urgent assembly call was still ringing in her ears. Yet, Flossie following the light of her flashlight, started to slowly leave the cooking class area until all that was left was the starlight that filled the night sky.
Leaving the military complex, Flossie made her familiar way to the vegetable market in the small town. Nigel Ferguson was the kind of person who always keeps his promise. He waited for her dutifully at the entrance of the market every day until she handed him her shopping list and tricycle, and then he would go and purchase the ingredients for her.
As for what she was going to do, that was beyond his responsibilities.
"If I’m not back in an hour, could you send the goods back for me?" Flossie looked at the outside sky and instructed Nigel Ferguson.
Nigel Ferguson, who was always grateful for Flossie, nodded his head. He had no intention of refusing.
Having obtained Nigel Ferguson’s consent, Flossie didn’t linger at the market any longer. She instead ventured into the dim light of the street outside.
Many stores along the street had not yet opened their doors, even the nearby military supplies store would only to open later. She originally wanted to buy gifts for Janice Wood, but with no shops open, Flossie could only wander around the street waiting for the nearby stores to open.
Last night there was a downpour, and the air was still filled with the smell of dampness. There was a slight chill in the humid air. She strolled in the dark street, and without realizing it, it began raining heavily again. She, who had never carried an umbrella, was soaked in a blink of an eye.
But she was always carefree, and even though she was somewhat cold, she did not seek shelter; she leisurely walked in the street, emanating a casual air of strolling in the rain. By the time she had realized it, she had passed the street and before her was the endless sea and a sandy beach soaked by the rainwater.
The sand was wet and soft, and Flossie had no intention of setting foot on it. Yet, she didn’t leave. She heard distant shouts of "Save him! Quick, help him!" Seeming far off, she only looked around from her position, and vaguely saw a crowd gathering towards the rolling waves. It seemed someone ran into trouble in the sea.
Spotting a few camouflages out of the corner of her eye, Flossie frowned in thought, and dismissed the thought to return. Instead, she headed straight towards the crowd.
and as it turned out, all those wearing camouflage suits on the beach were acquaintances. Apart from several recruits, the rest were all official members of her squad.
In the torrential rain, they stood solemnly before the sea, their eyes filled only with the surging waves. Their gazes were somewhat chilling, but every face was serious and anxious, none showed fear.
Without a doubt, the situation here was dangerous.
Yet, they firmly stood their ground.
"What are you all doing standing here, go save my son!"
"Wuwuwu, aren’t you soldiers supposed to protect the people?"
"My son, my son ..."
She had only just moved closer when a flurry of women’s cries reached her ears. Their heart-wrenching expressions mixed into the falling rain, projecting an image of utter despair and pain.
Flossie paused to take a closer look at the conditions of her surroundings. Not many soldiers were left ashore, and many of them were recruits. Among them, a significant number were those who did not pass the underwater combat.
"Our brothers have already gone in to save him!" The soldier, who was being tugged towards the sea by a woman, abruptly turned and forcefully brushed her hand off. When he shouted back, his eyes shot wide open. Not only rain but also tears graced his eyes. He pointed towards the sea, "Those who just dived in are all our brothers! Do you think we’re not worried?!"
"Then why aren’t you going in?" That woman continued to sob and yell, using all her strength. Her face was distorted with grief.
No sooner had her words left her mouth, tears streamed down the soldier’s face, falling with the rain onto the ground, disappearing without a trace.
Another soldier stepped forward, patting his shoulder. However, both his expression and movements were filled with heavy helplessness.
Rain continued to pour relentlessly, yet Flossie, watching this scene unfold, couldn’t help feeling a sense of displeasure.
Nevertheless, the soldier did not continue to argue, but the woman seemed to have lost all reason. She rushed towards that soldier, using all her strength to push him towards the sea. Her voice hoarse from shouting, "Tell me, why aren’t you going in?! Are you afraid of dying?!"
Tell me, why aren’t you going in?! Are you afraid of dying?!
Each word, each sentence, pierced the hearts of the soldiers ashore, giving rise to waves of ripples. The heaviness of its undertone made it hard for them to breathe.
They were left ashore because they were poor swimmers.
But why were these civilians so cruel? So cruel that they can ask these men to enter the sea to face certain death without a shred of guilt?
They did not understand.
Several female recruits had already broken down into tears in each other’s arms.
Meanwhile, Flossie, who had been silently observing everything, took a deep breath, and walked directly towards that woman.
