"Did you bite into it?"
"Oh, it was really there in yours?"
"Sergeant Lin, did you do this on purpose, put it specifically in her dumpling?"
Seeing Flossie Wright pull the bullet shell from her food, a wailing sound suddenly came from the kitchen.
Flossie Wright was bewildered.
However, listening to the jumbled explanations, she gradually understood what was going on.
It’s a tradition during Chinese New Year to put items inside dumplings, each implying a different meaning.
But in the Forces, the most common item to be found is a bullet shell.
Sergeant Lin put two bullet shells, one was found by Becca Reyes last night, and the other ended up in Flossie Wright’s hand.
How coincidental.
It was Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes who found them.
It’s hard not to suspect that it was arranged.
But all doubts died down with one stern look from Sergeant Lin.
Under Sergeant Lin’s intimidating gaze, everyone had to go back to doing their tasks, cutting vegetables, cooking, washing rice, making Steamed Buns...
Flossie Wright put the bullet shell aside, and after those watchful eyes shifted away from her, she went back to eating her dumplings.
"Hey, everyone’s here?"
In a short while, a cheerful voice called out and unexpected guests arrived through the back door.
The voice came from Austin Shepherd.
People looked and noticed he had two soldiers carrying bundles of bedding standing behind him.
"What’s going on?" Neal Thompson was the first to ask.
She had been the assistant to the cooking class supervisor for some years, and every time she saw soldiers carrying bedding, it usually meant that the new recruits’ training had ended and new recruits would be transferred to their cooking duty.
"We’re transferring two people over here," Austin Shepherd entered the room, "Since Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes are being transferred, I worried that there wouldn’t be enough people in the cooking class."
As he finished.
The kitchen fell silent.
Everyone looked at each other, not understanding.
Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes were being transferred... Why hadn’t they heard anything about it?
"Sergeant Lin, what’s going on?"
Neal Thompson instinctively turned to Sergeant Lin. When she asked, she couldn’t help revealing a hint of accusation.
If cooking personnel were being transferred, the sergeant was sure to be the first to know. Yet, the fact that he hadn’t informed her about it was simply disrespectful.
Sergeant Lin paused his chopping, turned around and looked at everyone in the kitchen.
Apart from the discontent in Neal Thompson’s eyes and the joy in Yvonne Watson’s, the rest of the class looked shocked, confused, and reluctant. Their questioning eyes turned to him, a hint of resentment still remained.
"The Brigadier’s order, they’re being transferred to participate in the new recruit training," Sergeant Lin said in a heavy voice, providing them with an explanation.
The kitchen was even quieter now.
A number of the cooking staff didn’t dare to speak up. It was hard for them to accept this without any mental preparation.
They could accept Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes’ departure.
This place wasn’t somewhere they could stay for long.
But, they were all part of the cooking class, they were a collective - even though the time they had spent together wasn’t long, they found joy in each other’s company.
This sudden departure, without even giving them any time to adjust...
It was difficult for them.
"Do we have to leave now?"
