"Hey! Flossie!"
As she walked out of the Assembly Area, she saw a figure in military green waving at her from a distance and running toward her.
Taken aback for a moment, Flossie Wright focused her gaze and recognized the dust-covered face.
Willie Ash.
He was in army combat uniform, but he was filthy as if he had rolled in a mud pit, his face smeared with a fair amount of dirt and looking grimy.
After a brief thought, Flossie Wright asked, "Just you?"
"Uh..." Willie paused for a moment, understanding her meaning, his face paled as he explained, "Yeah, the nearby areas have been pretty much searched, the Captain and the others organized a team to head into the mountains early this morning, leaving a few to act with other teams."
Taking a longer look at him, Flossie gave a faint nod, "Oh."
With a slight cough, Willie felt rather guilty.
Those left behind were mostly new soldiers who had just passed muster, and then there was him. Though he was supposed to lead the team, he was still the one left behind, which was quite embarrassing.
Fortunately, Glenn Hutchinson had given a veiled order, asking him to keep an extra eye on Flossie Wright when resting.
Last night, when Willie went to inform Flossie of her tent location, he had encountered the man guarding her. The man’s presence was so overwhelming that Willie felt as if he couldn’t breathe, making him acutely aware of the Captain’s crisis and naturally agreeing to supervise without hesitation.
Here he was, having just busied himself all morning and came back, approaching Flossie the moment he saw her, and also relieved not to see that man.
Hesitating, Willie stepped closer and said with a cheeky grin, "So, Flossie, where are you heading?"
Touching her nose, Flossie answered nonchalantly, "Just strolling around."
The earthquake had just passed, aftershocks were still happening, what was there to stroll around for—was she kidding?
Muttering to himself, Willie thought it over and suggested, "Aftershocks happen frequently, and nothing is safe around here, ahem, can we not stroll?"
"No, we can’t."
With her arms crossed, Flossie stood casually, scanning across the collapsed buildings in the distance.
"But look, what if there’s an aftershock, what if buildings collapse, what if... You know, it’s not about fearing the hundredth possibility, but the one in a million chance. If something were to happen to you, the Captain wouldn’t let me off either!"
Willie’s brows were furrowed with worry; his whole face nearly crumpled up.
Having interacted with Flossie Wright before, he was well aware of her stubbornness; she wouldn’t simply change her mind.
He didn’t know why she had to come here, but since she had, she surely wouldn’t just let it go.
"I won’t have any problems."
Flossie’s indifferent reply came as she took steps forward.
Watching her walk away, Willie panicked and quickly followed, proposing cheerfully to Flossie, "How about this for your safety, I’ll accompany you, how about that?"
"Whatever."
Flossie cast him a sidelong glance and shrugged.
Getting her approval, Willie’s face lit up with joy, "That’s settled then!"
Thus, comrade Willie Ash, with an empty stomach, followed along and only after a while realized he was hungry. His previously cheerful expression promptly drooped.
If only he had grabbed something to eat beforehand.
He also had no clue what Flossie was up to or how long she intended to walk...
Oh, the worries in Willie’s heart.
"Want some?"
Up ahead, Flossie Wright stopped in her tracks, turned her head to look at him, and shook the compressed biscuits in her hand.
Nodding eagerly, comrade Willie Ash accepted the surprise.
He happily received the compressed biscuits, following Flossie through layers of rubble without a single complaint.
